The 2008 Merit League competition has kicked off with the
Cumberland Beavers, defeating the CSU Bathurst Mungoes down at Ollie Webb
Reserve in Parramatta.
Bathurst and Cumberland, who participated in the first
trial of the Merit League back in 2007, have been strong supporters of the
concept as a means of giving match practice to some of their fringe players.
Breaking
their match up into three periods to suit the conditions and number of players
available for the clash, Cumberland
hit the ground running racing out to a two try lead at the end of the first
break.
The remaining periods were a lot more competitive with the two teams scoring
one try a piece in each of them, giving confidence to the Bathurst side who
will be looking to host the Cumberland merit league team in the return fixture later
this year.
Cumberland, now on top of the Merit
League ladder, are looking to consolidate their strong start by scheduling in
future fixtures against UTS and Norwest.
