NSW Uni v “That State”

After a 2 year hiatus University Representative Rugby League is back and up in the state where the sun shines all the time (Apparently!) the AURL Interstate Challenge will take place this Saturday at Maroochydore Rugby Leagues Club.

Faced with over 80 applications this year from all over this great state, NSW Uni Selectors narrowed it down, to the best of the best to take on the banana benders on there home turf.

With the squad selected head coach Luke Mutton along with his assistant coach Drew Dalton and support staff, gathered the boys for a one-off training session 10 days prior to them departing for camp.

Arriving on the Sunshine Coast last Wednesday and with the game in less than 72 hours the squad trained hard, being put through their paces with 3 tough sessions and pool recovery, before a lighter captains run on Friday afternoon in preparation of the match.

But we are not here to talk about all the fun, this story is a about redemption with the boys north of the border still holding the trophy after their crushing victory over NSW Uni in 2019, but this year our boys are ready and will be looking to take another bit of silverware away, so the Sunshine state is a little less shinny!

So with state pride on the line and a spot in the AURL touring squad, you can add the Australian University Rugby League Interstate match to the feast of NSW v “That State” matches this week and weekend.

Canada Tour Match 2 Wednesday 15 July Vs Surrey Beavers – Match Report

The second match of the NSWTSRL Rep Team’ Canada Tour was played against local British Columbia competition team Surrey Beavers at South Surrey Athletic Park (located about one hour drive east of Vancouver city) on Wednesday night 15 July.

Despite just missing out on a place in the 2015 BC comp. grand final the NSW players attended last Thursday, the Beavers have been the dominant team in the fledgling BC rugby league competition and were keen to pit their skills against the tourists.

As with their first tour match against the Bulldogs, the opening session was witness to some willing displays in defence and in attack it was the Beavers that actually made the first line break. The NSW players clearly showed they had learned their lesson from their first match, completing their early sets and at the 7th minute reaping the benefit when a sweeping back line play put winger Mitch Scott over wide out. He converted his own try for the tourists to take a 6-0 lead.

From the restart of play the tourists continued to attack the Beavers line and finished the play with half Jake Vrhanos putting his Sydney Uni team mate Scott Bunch over under the posts. An easy Scott conversion extended the NSW lead to 12-0.

Minutes later a long block-busting run from front rower Junior Tuapo enabled Bunch to set five eight Allan Newton up for a try and with Scott on target with his goal-kicking the NSW team was ahead 18-0. Soon after Newton continued a dominant attacking display with a brilliant pass to put fullback Luke Johnston over for a simple try. Scott converted and with 20 minutes remaining before half time it was looking like the Tertiary team was about to clock up a cricket score.

The proud Beavers had different ideas and worked their way back into the match, holding their own and making a couple of good breaks. Four minutes from half time their hard work paid dividends when winger Nathaniel Silva collected a bomb to score wide out.

Right on half time hooker Tim Curley sliced his way through the Beavers defence to put prop Seamus Leyland over and the tourists went to the break ahead 28-4.

The second half started well for the Beavers with fullback Nick Bartholme scoring early after making a run direct from a scrum win. However, their hopes of getting back into the match were dashed soon after when centre Sam Asfour weaved his way through some bamboozled defence to cross for what was to become the first of a hat-trick of tries for him.

A try to Tuapo quickly followed and unfortunately for the Beavers their defence faded and the tourists were able to run at will, with centre Shane Rowe scoring at mid point of the half and strong running from Asfour enabling him to cross twice more and Leyland diving over for a second try.

Queensland win the Tas Baitieri Cup Second Year in a Row

The Uni RL Qld Residents defeated the NSW Tertiary Students 22-18 in a hard fought match at Geoff King Motors Oval, Coffs Harbour, in the annul Tas Baitieri Tertiary/Uni Challenge Cup on Saturday 12 July 2014.
Played in perfect conditions on a warm winter afternoon, before a good sized crowd, the NSW side was the first to draw blood when second rower Shane Coppell crossed in the corner after 4 minutes. A sideline conversion from Steve Spilios put them in front 6-0 and it looked like the Blues bigger forward pack might dominate their maroon counterparts, but a poor completion rate gave Qld the opportunity to take the upper the hand an they posted 3 unconverted tries to go to the break 12-6 in front.
The first 20 minutes of the second half was a real arm wrestle, with the blues continuing to hand the ball back to the maroons and then muscling up in defence to hold out their attack. The NSW line could only take so much pressure before cracking and crack it did when, after 20 minutes Qld centre Kylan Lovai ran 90 metres to score and soon after his centre partner Brandon Black crossed to take his team to what looked like a 22-6 winning lead.
However, something seemed to click with the NSW attack and with less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Sean McKenzie crossed in the same corner twice and with Michael Zappia kicking both sideline conversions, suddenly the match was in the balance.
The final 4 minutes was gripping as the NSW side tried everything it could to break the Qld defence and the maroons held on grimly to eventually hold the blues out.
